Leaders of Khayelitsha to speak out against secrecy
Public meeting, Tuesday 19 July 2011
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Social Justice Coalition (SJC), Equal Education (EE) invite you to a public meeting as members of the Right2Know campaign to demand accountability and transparency from our leaders.
We reject the Protection of Information Bill (the Secrecy Bill) in its current form because it undermines our rights to access and share information. The Bill would give even more power to officials to keep information out of the hands of the people, and strip whistleblowers of their right to speak out against corruption and wrongdoing. As community-based organisations we view the Secrecy Bill as a symbol and a symptom of the broader struggle for truth and freedom in South Africa. Communities across the nation are grappling with corruption, lack of accountability and service delivery at every level of government. We need access to information to hold our leaders to account.
The people of Khayelitsha need to stand up to oppose the passing of the Secrecy Bill in its current form, as we will be largely affected by it. We must protect our Constitutional right to access information; we must demand accountability. We demand delivery, not secrecy!
