Right2Know Western Cape salutes Women Whistleblowers…WOMANDLA!!!

SecomocoSibambatoFor the Women’s Month (August) Right2Know Western Cape is profiling women whistleblowers to celebrate their courage and commitment to transparency. Some of these brave women are also featured in the 2014 R2K Whistleblower Calendar.

Whistleblowing recognises that every employee has an active role to play in disclosing unlawful and any other irregular activity and that they require protection from any reprisal as a result of making such a disclosure.

This week we are celebrating Segomoco Sibambato. She is a former manager at the Transport, Education and Training Authority. Sibambato was fired after raising concerns that the CEO had flouted procurement policies. The procurement of services from Pretoria-based IT firm Mondial was irregular because the tender was not put to open bidding or closed bidding.

Eventually, a government investigation vindicated Segomoco and led to the suspension of Teta’s CEO. It concluded that the services for which Mondial received R197 448 were not specialised and could have been provided by at least 30 other IT firms in the Johannesburg area.
