The recent #FeesMustFall protests and related actions on various campuses put the right to protest in the national spotlight.

Across many different campuses, there were reports of human rights violations, including police brutality, intimidation, and restrictions on the right to protest and free speech.

At the University of Johannesburg, two members of the academic staff, Professor Jane Duncan and Professor Pier Paolo Frassinelli, have compiled a preliminary account of human rights violations against protesting students and workers at the University of Johannesburg, during these protests. The accounts are drawn from eyewitness testimonies, video footage and photographs — the stated intention is to place these incidents on record, and to make the case for an independent and public investigation into these incidents.
