Open meetings: Civil society orgs urge Speaker to ensure transparency in Parliament

Right2Know, as a member of Parliament Watch, has joined a range of organisations in expressing concern at the growing number of meetings in Parliament that are being closed to the public. We have sent a joint letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, with the following requests:

  1. A record of all meetings which have been fully or partially closed to the public since the opening of the 5th Parliament in May 2014 and the reasons put forward for closing these meetings. We request this information by Friday 23 November 2018.
  2. Amendments to the Rules of the National Assembly to ensure meetings are not closed against the public interest, and only after ggfollowing a fair process, including giving prior notice and clear reasons.
  3. In the interim, urgent intervention by the Speaker to prevent Committees from closing meetings without following robust process.
