R2K joins call to end Zim internet shutdown

R2K has co-signed a letter by more than 20 organisations in the region calling on the government of Zimbabwe to end the internet shutdown and restore access to internet and social media sites immediately.

Internet shutdowns are an outrageous attack on people’s right to know. The current shutdown in Zimbabwe is only the latest example of governments’ attempts to silence the voices of ordinary people by blocking access to communications, with the governments of Sudan and DRC implementing similar shutdowns against their own citizens in the early weeks of 2019.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe, and call on the government of South Africa to take a strong stand against these anti-democratic abuses and take all possible steps to ensure that internet access is restored in Zimbabwe and an end to state violence against civilians.
