Freedom Week 2014: Call to Action

FreedomWeek2014In the run-up to the 2014 elections, the Right2Know campaign will again mark “Freedom Week” – 27 April (Freedom Day), 1 May (Worker’s Day) and 3 May (World Press Freedom Day) – in recognition of the struggles and victories that all citizens, workers and journalists have fought for and continue to fight for.

Hold an Event: We call on all supporting organisations to host public events between Saturday 27 April and Sunday 3 May to raise awareness of the various challenges facing our democracy. This could be a public meeting, a film screening, or a house meeting, or setting up an information table at your local mall or pamphleteering at a local train station or taxi rank. Let us know if you would like R2K to assist getting a speakers for your event.

Choose an Issue: This Freedom Week you may want to consider holding public meetings on the theme of 20 Years of Democracy, the upcoming elections, the rise of police brutality, the high cost of communication, the critical need for an political independence in the SABC or your local community radio station, etc.

Screen a Film: You may want to screen a film to kickstart a discussion or raise awareness of an issue. We’ve complied a list of R2K-related films, documentaries and TV shows capturing here.

Get in Touch: If you would be interested in participating, please send details of your event (including a title, date, time, venue, contact details, and brief description) to mark@r2k.org.za before Wednesday 16 April so that they can be included in the main Freedom Week programme that R2K will promote.
